Candy made by a long-established soy sauce brewery in Kyomachiya
Shokunin Shoyu No. 3020
A mild taste that's addictive
"Are soy sauce candies sweet or salty?" is a question we often get from our customers. When you put one in your mouth, you first taste a slight sweetness, followed by the aroma and richness of soy sauce that gradually spreads. Rather than being "salty," the feeling that lingers on your tongue, the "gentle umami of soy sauce," is what makes you want to keep reaching for another one, and we think that's the secret. It has an elegant taste, just like Japanese sweets, and somehow brings back memories.
Soy sauce candy is unusual, but it's much milder than I imagined, and as a fan of Japanese sweets, I can't get enough of it. It also pairs perfectly with slightly bitter tea.

Made by a long-established soy sauce brewery in Kyoto
"Honokani Soy Sauce Candy" is made by Sawai Soy Sauce Shop, a long-established soy sauce brewery in Kyomachiya.
Sawai Soy Sauce Shop was founded in 1879, and moved to its current location four years later, around 1883, where it continues to produce soy sauce. The shop's exterior is a Kyoto machiya townhouse and its white-walled storehouse. You can sense its history from the large wooden house with its exposed gable, and the shop continues to produce soy sauce using domestic ingredients and traditional methods and tools, passing down the flavor it has stubbornly preserved through oral tradition. Located just a five-minute walk from Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, it is a popular spot for tourists as well.
The store attached to the brewery sells not only soy sauce but also this "Honokani Soy Sauce Candy." The "Honokani Soy Sauce Candy" has a tasteful label and a somewhat rustic feel.

My hands reach out while I'm working
At Shokunin Shoyu, there are little candies placed next to the staff's computers. It's comforting to have these candies when you're taking a break from work or just want to take a short break. They go well with coffee or tea, and are perfect for a change of mood. You'll always find yourself thinking, "Just one more..." The gentle sweetness and rich flavor of the soy sauce gently soothe your tired mind.

It is popular among a wide range of generations
This candy has a mild flavor that is recommended for adults as well as small children. It's fun to give it to small children, as they all have different reactions. At first, they are often surprised as soon as they put it in their mouth, saying "Huh?!" It's different from the fruit candy they usually eat. They are surprised, saying "This is a new taste!", but before you know it, the candy is gone, so I think it must be delicious after all.
My mother often brings them to her twice-monthly art class, saying, "They're perfect as a teatime snack." They seem to be popular with the other students in the class.
These candies boast a comforting taste that can be enjoyed by the whole family, regardless of age, and you'll want to keep them on hand as a little daily treat.

Perfect for a little thank you!
The individually wrapped pieces make them perfect for small gifts or souvenirs. The size and price are just right, so they are not a burden for either the giver or the receiver. They may seem unexpected, like "soy sauce candy?", but when you actually try them, you'll find that they have a gentle flavor that will please anyone.
I often buy it as a gift for friends and relatives. They usually ask, "Is this really soy sauce?", but after they try it, they're all excited and say, "It's delicious!"
